Call now (+49 7165 8062)History of the house:
Goldener Ochsen looks back on more than 241 years of history.
Already in 1785, the property is documented in records – making it one of the oldest establishments in the district of Goeppingen. For generations, the house has been owned by our family, and we maintain this tradition with pride.
Early on, the "Ochsen" served as an important lodging place for travellers and coachmen who stopped here on their way through the Stauferland.
A place with a long history – and likely older roots than the first document suggests.
This assumption is supported by the special location of our house: historically, an important trade route passed right by our building. Even today, the historic path up to the ruins of Hohenstaufen Castle begins here.
The historical importance of the Ochsen as a stop at the foot of Mount Hohenstaufen is also reflected in literature.
Wilhelm Raabe mentioned the house in 1873 in his novel "Christoph Pechlin".
A small piece of technical history: early on, the Ochsen had one of the first telephone connections in the region.
At the time, our number was simply "2". Later it became "262" – and today you can still reach us under the familiar ending 8062.
Ideal base for hikers:
Our house is an ideal base for hikers who want to explore the summit of Mount Hohenstaufen.
From the "Grabengasse" parking area directly opposite our house, you can reach the summit in about 20 to 30 minutes on foot, depending on route and pace.
More parking is available at the "Schottengasse" car park by the sports field in Hohenstaufen. From there, a pleasant footpath also leads to Mount Hohenstaufen in about 30 minutes.
At the top, you are rewarded with a wide panoramic view over the Fils and Rems valleys. Mount Hohenstaufen, a striking cone-shaped peak at 684 metres, forms the westernmost elevation of the Three Kaiser Mountains.
The name "Staufen" comes from the old term "Stauf", describing a pointed, cone-shaped mountain.

Hohenstaufen Castle ruins:
The ruins of Hohenstaufen Castle, the ancestral seat of the powerful Staufer dynasty, once stood on the prominent Mount Hohenstaufen in the heart of the Stauferland.
Today, only remnants of the former hilltop fortress remain, offering a fascinating glimpse into history.
Built around 1070 by Duke Friedrich I of Swabia, the castle was an important centre of medieval power and politics.
Spielburg nature reserve:
Spielburg, a striking rock formation on the south-western slope of Mount Hohenstaufen, is part of a protected nature reserve in Goeppingen.
It impresses with its geological history and offers stunning views over the surrounding valleys and landscapes.
With its unique flora and fauna, Spielburg is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers.
The distinctive, heath-like dry biotope "Naturschutzgebiet Spielburg" belongs to the Hohenstaufen district and is a beloved local recreation area.
A special tip is the hike along the "Loewenpfad Spielburg-Runde", a roughly 3.5 km route connecting Spielburg with Goeppingen's local mountain.
This certified tour is ideal for families and anyone who wants to enjoy nature at a relaxed pace.
Waescherburg:
Waescherburg in Waescherhof, a district of Waeschenbeuren, was built between 1220 and 1250.
At 436 metres above the Beutental, the hilltop castle offers an unobstructed view towards Mount Hohenstaufen and is a rewarding excursion destination in the Swabian Alb region.
Lorch Monastery:
Lorch Monastery sits on a ridge in the scenic Rems Valley, located between Stuttgart and Aalen.
The extensive complex with its characteristic surrounding wall reflects the impressive heritage of the once-powerful Staufer family.
The surrounding area offers countless hiking and cycling routes for all levels.
The region is also ideal for multi-day tours and promises memorable nature experiences.
