History of the Goldener Ochsen in Hohenstaufen:

Our traditional Hotel Gasthof Goldener Ochsen in Goeppingen-Hohenstaufen looks back on over 240 years of history and is one of the oldest establishments in the region.

The "Ochsen" was first documented in 1785 as an inn with a butchery and agriculture.

Back then, the property included not only its own well, cattle stables, and a barn, but also forests and fields that supplied the house with its own products.

Our Ochsen has also left its mark on literature: Famous writer Wilhelm Raabe mentioned the house in 1873 in his novel Christoph Pechlin – a sign of the special role the inn plays in the history of Goeppingen Hohenstaufen.

Ideal starting point for hikers:

Our hotel is a perfect starting point for hiking enthusiasts who want to explore the summit of Hohenstaufen – a destination that can be comfortably reached on foot in about 20 minutes.

Once at the top, a spectacular panoramic view of the idyllic Fils and Rems valleys awaits you.

The Hohenstaufen mountain, an impressive cone-shaped peak with a height of 684 meters, forms the westernmost elevation of the three Kaiserberge (Emperor Mountains), alongside Stuifen and Rechberg, picturesquely situated between the Rems Valley to the north and the Fils Valley to the south.

The name “Staufen” originates from the old term “Stauf,” which describes a pointed, conical mountain.

Hohenstaufen Castle Ruins:

The Hohenstaufen castle ruins, once the ancestral stronghold of the powerful Staufer dynasty, sit atop the striking Hohenstaufen mountain in the heart of Stauferland.

Today, only remnants of the once-proud hilltop castle remain, yet they offer a fascinating glimpse into history.

Built around 1070 by Duke Friedrich I of Swabia, the castle was a significant center of medieval power and politics.

Spielburg Nature Reserve:

The Spielburg, a striking rock formation on the southwestern slope of Hohenstaufen, is part of a protected nature reserve in Goeppingen.

It captivates with its geological history and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and landscapes.

With its unique flora and fauna, the Spielburg is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers.

The scenically unique and highly popular heath-like dry habitat “Spielburg Nature Reserve” belongs to the Hohenstaufen district and is a favored local recreation area.

A notable feature is the slab of White Jurassic limestone that broke off about 2 million years ago during a landslide from the then-extending Swabian Alb escarpment, now forming the core of the nature reserve.

The limestone was quarried in several stone pits until the mid-1950s, which now serve as so-called secondary biotopes.

In the northern part of the area, there are dolines (sinkholes).

On the limestone of the landslide, a heath-like dry habitat developed with diverse structural elements: rocks, scree slopes, semi-dry grasslands, hedges, small woodlands, orchards, and wet zones alternate on a small scale, creating a unique habitat for numerous rare plant and animal species.

The flora and fauna include around 250 plant species, including rare ones like silver thistle, bee orchid, and fringed gentian, about 50 bird species such as red-backed shrike, various warblers, and woodpeckers, butterflies like swallowtail, painted lady, and peacock, and reptiles such as grass snake, smooth snake, and slow worm.

A special tip is the Loewenpfad Spielburg-Runde hike, a certified, approximately 3.5-kilometer trail that connects the Spielburg with Goeppingen’s local mountain.

This tour is ideal for families and anyone who wants to enjoy nature at a leisurely pace.

Waescher Castle:

The Waescherburg (also known as Waescherschloss or Waescherschloessle) in Waescherhof, a district of Waeschenbeuren (Goeppingen district, Baden-Wuerttemberg), was built between 1220 and 1250.

Perched at 436 meters above the Beutental valley, this hilltop castle offers a clear view of the Hohenstaufen.

Lorch Monastery:

Lorch Monastery sits on a ridge in the picturesque Rems Valley, located between Stuttgart and Aalen.

The expansive complex, with its characteristic ring wall, bears witness to the impressive legacy of the once-powerful Staufer family.

The surrounding area offers countless opportunities for hiking and cycling tours to suit all levels.

The region is also ideal for multi-day tours, promising unforgettable nature experiences.
